L3mmy's Devlog
Day 1
I didn’t do a lot on day one as I had school, Pine started to make the game and I plopped by at the end of the day to make some simple sprites, I accidentally made a fox for the main player, sent it to Pine, who seem to have liked it and decided to keep it. I also did some barriers for the player to bounce off, choose red since it looked good, nice pop from the dull grey of the bricks.
Day 2
I started the day with Pineberry greeting me, how nice of him :p, then hopped right into pico-8 to make some more sprites, such as the dead body of the player, moved on to do the art for the keys, then the lock, added some variation and made a tileset so it doesn’t look boring all the time you look at it. I then proceeded to make a quick logo using all the available pico-8 colours, the logo that there is now is a slightly modified version, the one on itch.io is the true one but I didn’t want to bother adding those extra secret colours. Worked a bit on the art for the reanimator, gave it blue eyes to fit with the corpse of the player, then tried to add some code that ended up being a little bit of a problem but pine fixed it, then some sound.
Day 3
The last day for me as I can’t be awake till 6 in the morning cuz of a test, and sleep, but mostly the test. this day was mostly an art grind as there was a lot of stuff to do, although my first reaction was to make a drum loop for the game before delving in the art. I then tried to play the game, never played it before as there wasn’t any real levels, and turns out I suck at it… Then began the grind for those kaijus art, what are supposed to be the main focus of this game, I messed around pico-8’s art editor for a while before finding a good look for those, messed up Pine’s code again, added the logo in the game as it previously was only in Aseprite (the program I use to do pixel art), then Pine proceeded to do a small flex on me and shared one of his runs. As the time before the end was still pretty long, I decided to add some random stuff that could be nice to have, such as author medals that you can get if your time is close to my time or Pine’s time. Last thing I proceeded to do is to write this devlog.
Overall experience
While me and Pine teaming up was kinda a joke for me at first, I do not regret any moment of thi collaboration between us, even if Pine was offline most of the time I was on and we basically only chatted early in the morning or late at night, it was pretty fun, having to think with pico-8’s restrictions on colours was pretty refresing and nice from the usual art grind and forced me to approach things in a different manner.
